Members -- The Village Band

About the Members mailing list for the Village Band
English (USA)

This Members list is a managed mailing list (sometimes called a Listserv) on our web site host. You can treat it just like a mailing list -- except that you don't have to worry about

  • Keeping your own copy of it. The list of all members/subscribers is kept in a central place on the web server.
  • Adding new members to it when they join the band. A new member joins the lists by "self-subscribing" and is then approved for membership by the band management.
  • Removing members from it when they leave the band. A member "self-unsubscribes", which requires no approval.
The list manager handles all that by itself. So there's no reason the list should be out of date. You are also able to:
  • Determine how you want to receive messages that are posted to the list: either immediately, or in a digest that you may get once a day.
  • Look at the list archive of all previous messages and thread. The archive is only available to list subscribers.

Otherwise, using the Members list is just as easy as sending email. Keep reading below to see how to use the list in these ways. (The current archive is only available to the list members.)

How to use the Members mailing list
The first thing you have to do is to subscribe to the list. If you aren't already subscribed, see the Subscribing to the List section below. One you're subscribed, then ...
  • Whenever anyone sends (posts) a message to the list, you'll get an email with that message in it.
  • Whenever you post to the list, then everyone else on the list will get a copy of your message.
  • You can also send a message to just one or more people on the list -- without sending to the entire list.
  • You can reply to a message either by replying to the entire list or by replying only to the sender of that message.

To post (send) a public message to ALL subscribers of the list:

Use your normal email application to send your message to Your message will then automatically be sent to all subscribers.

To post a private message to one or more subscribers:

If you already have the email addresses of the people you want to send your message to, then just use your regular email program to send your message. Of course, it won't appear in the Members list archive since it's a private message.

If you don't have an email address for a member you want to send a private message, then use the section below titled See All Subscribers to the Members List to see the names and email addresses of all the subscribers to this list. Then use your email application to send your private email.

To reply to a posting to the Members list:

Just reply to the message in the way you would normally reply to an email message

By default your "Reply" will go only to the individual poster of the message -- and NOT to the entire list of subscribers.

If you want your reply to go to EVERYONE on the list, then you need to need to use your "Reply All" feature in your email application.

Only messages sent to will go to the list of ALL subscribers.
